A Retweet Can Change a Life

It's amazing the impact the internet can have on the world and how much it can destroy or promote something. By just a click of a button or an upload of a photograph, someone can completely change the world and the way we look at it. For instance, the numerous incidents with United Airlines have left a huge impact on their business just by people sharing their stories online. By using the online platform, the incidents can spread like wildfire. People can see and share these shocking stories from all over the world. From funny songs 'United Breaks Guitars' to misunderstood tweets about getting aids in Africa, people push the information through the web. Sadly, more often than not peoples lives are drastically impacted in some very negative ways like losing a job or entire social support. It's good an bad how this seems to work. It's good that people can reach justice when wronged by a company or organization. It feels good to see people be done right after they are done wrong. I think it shows the true size of the internet when people are so easily able to see these things. But often some of these occurrences are not helping anyone. For instance, when people get ahold of a tacky tweet or picture and send it everywhere it can have harmful effects on those who posted it. Often they are harassed, trolled, and deprived of a voice. They hardly ever get to defend themselves and go without the mention of their mistakes. But what makes it okay when its a company but not an individual person? I feel that it reflects how we perceive larger entities and how they are the "bullies" and "deserved it." It is interesting how we define things as humans and what we acknowledge as okay or not. It's somewhat contradicting but we allow it all the time. I don't see an end to this in the near future. I feel that it's only to going to get worse as we further divide as a society.

Hackers Paradise

I like to consider myself tech savvy to a certain extent. But I cannot lie and say that I know anything about proper security and protection when it comes to my computer and phone. I am probably considered a good target for hackers. I don't understand the "cloud" and how everything tech wise that I own is connected to one another and has everything shared between it. I don't even realize how often my phone is telling others where I am. After discussion in this class, I have recently been more freaked about my web presence and location sharing. Not that I was some avid "checking in" Facebook person, but things like Snapchat has been sharing my location for months and I didn't even realize I was doing so. I have noticed how little I know about what happens when you share things like that. You have to remember how smart others are and how tricky they can be just by using your social media. Especially when it comes to passwords, I am the worst. I keep the 4 ...

The Internet's Good Side

We often talk about the internet as a good thing that can be used badly. The possibilities for good within the internet are abundant but they only gain attention rarely. More often we see the negative consequences of type happy trolls spread across the world wide web. But nowadays we have dozens of possibilities to do good in the world through the web. From GoFundMe to the Ice Bucket Challenge people are raising money and awareness. While some argue that it's not real altruism, I believe that it is helping the world in great ways. I think the internet provides a larger platform for people to connect and join together. I feel that it makes it easier for people to build a network and get their message out. The internet provides a place for just about anything to happen and it can reach way beyond the small confines of social groups. Websites like GoFundMe are crucial for organizations and individuals to reach out in times of need. However, like anything, this can have negat...

The Final Blog: Pinterest

Overall, I believe our project worked out well and incorporated the technology into our presentation. The site itself helped us due to its broad uses like sharing. We were able to cite our references directly to the site in which we found them by Pinterest's tool of embedding. In addition, we could pin examples to further justify our arguments and findings. It was easy for us to switch back and forth to complete our portions of the project as well with the easy surfing of the site. We had a little bit of trouble with including our SlideShare slides as the links didn't want to work. I feel as though the internet connection was a bit of a hindrance not necessarily Pinterest itself. I feel as though we could have maybe organized our Boards and Pins a little bit better as they were somewhat unorganized, but I feel it was not a major issue to our project. In addition, I think we could have done a better job of highlighting negative consequences. I feel like I may have not accurately...
